Jorge Armenta, the director of media outlet "Medios Obson", has been tragically killed in an armed attack in Sonora (Northern Mexico) as per local authorities. He was under government protection after receiving death threats; one of the police officers accompanying him was killed and the other was wounded. His death is being investigated by local authorities and RSF (Reporters Without Borders) is investigating the type of protection he had.
Jorge was the third journalist to be murdered this year. In 2019, 10 journalists were killed and since 2000 more than 140 journalists have been murdered in Mexico, making it the deadliest country for reporters outside of war zones such as Afghanistan and Syria. It shockingly ranks 143 out if 180 countries on the 2020 World Press Freedom Index. The most shameful part is that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who took office in December 2018, vowed to put an end to these murders but activists report that the measures taken are merely symbolic.
