Germany criminalizes burning of foreign flags

On 14th May 2020 German lawmakers voted to criminalize the act destroying or defiling the flag of a nation, including that of the EU, as well as denigration of any national anthem. The offence will be punishable by a fine and up to 3 years.

This has taken place in response to protests that took place in Berlin in 2017 wherein the Israeli flag was crudely burnt by protestors while the police watched.

This comes as an ammendment to the pre-existing law protecting foreign flags displayed on embassies and in ceremonially capacities such as sporting events and is expected to pass in June.  Opposers and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) condemn the act as excessive interference in free speech and artistic expression. However the government argues, and we wholeheartedly agree, that such a protest does not qualify as a peaceful protest. It is hurtful to people's feelings and national sentiments and serves no other purpose than to be cruel and wounding. We commend Germany for taking such a rare and powerful decision in the right direction.
