Canada bans assault weapons
After what seems to be the worst mass shooting incident to have taken place in the country, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced that military-grade “assault-style” weapons along with others have been banned. The total number of weapons banned is 1500.
The shooter who took the lives of 22 others in Nova Scotia recently had smuggled the weapons from the United States according to the RCMP. The weak laws of its neighbouring country poses an issue when the Canadian government is working towards stricter gun control measures.
With the announcement, the Prime Minister seems to be moving closer towards a promise he made during the previous election regarding gun control measures. He stated that there was no requirement for the presence of such destructive firearms in Canada, considering the fact that these weapons were capable of harming hundreds of people within a short span of time.
He also said that the government had already been formulating its own plans regarding stricter gun laws, but had been disturbed in the process due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At last, he mentions that a legislation to buy back the rifles will be introduced at a future date as he promised during the last federal elections.
